As a member of the Teachers Retirement System (TRS), you are eligible for retirement under the following conditions…
Normal Retirement
Completion of 30 years of creditable service - regardless of age.
Completion of at least ten years of creditable service AND attainment of age 60.
Early Retirement
Completion of at least 25 years of creditable service. If you retire under this provision, your benefit will be permanently reduced by the lesser of one-twelfth of 7 percent for each month you are below age 60 … OR 7 percent for each year or fraction of a year by which you have less than 30 years of creditable service.
A member who would attain 30 years of creditable service by December 31, of the ensuing school year may retire effective September 1, at the beginning of the school year on the basis of 30 years of creditable service. The retiring member must apply to TRS for this early retirement, and notify his employer no later than May 1, preceding the ensuing school year AND must pay the full actuarial cost of the service and the resulting early retirement.
Disability Retirement
You are eligible to apply for monthly benefits under the disability provisionsof the law if you are an active member, have 9-1/2 years of creditable service, and are permanently disabled.
